Instructions: How to make a stress ball?

I figured that since it is indeed the holidays for you all, it might be nice to get crafty every once in a while. I have come across the instructions on how to make stress balls as a completely random idea which will be great for examination periods and a fun activity to do when you have the time.

Need:
- Balloons (not water balloons)
- Flour/Sand/Rice/Corn starch
- Funnel
- Crafty things to decorate it with
Instructions:
1. Get your small round balloon and blow it up until it is about 4-5 inches around but do not tie it.
2. Pinch the top of the balloon shut whilst slowly placing a funnel into the tip.
3. Fill the top of the funnel with either flour/sand/rice/corn starch and slowly let go of the balloon so the filing is able to slide in.
4. Continue adding until you are happy with the amount and the firmness of the filled balloon.
5. Pull up the top of the balloon tightly and allow any excess air to be released.
6. Tie the balloon as closely to the tip as possible.
7. Decorate with permanent markers or whatever you wish.

Enjoy!

Gorgeous goodies for the girlies.

Just a completely random note for the lovely girls in my classes, I am totally in love with the amazingly sweet Pretty in Pink vanity cases which double perfectly as a cute pencil case, so perfect for back to school time. Priced at just $17.50, these vinyl cases will last forever as their style is timeless and the design is so chic. Buy them online at www.prettyinpinkdesigns.com.au/ or visit the gorgeous boutique at 533 King Street, Newtown. Enjoy!
PS: It did go through my mind as a possible XMAS present but I've resisted because I found something just as chic, if not more.

Great place to visit these holidays.

There is nothing that I adore more than a rainy grey day huddled up in a gorgeous dimly lit cafe with a hot chocolate by one side and a superb book on the other. My favourite place to do this would have to be the Guylian cafe. Located at The Rocks and Circular Quay, the Guylian cafe is a great hotspot in the heart of Sydney. Add a good book, the harbour view and a Degustation plate to share and your day is set. Check out www.guyliancafe.com.au/ for more information. Bon apetite!

Watch it: Lost in Austen.

On the 4th of October at 7pm on channel ABC, a comical Jane Auten series 'Lost in Austen' will be televised. Quoted as "Delightfully witty" - The Times and "A dream of a show" - Mail on Sunday. This is a warm film which will gain laughter and enjoyment this Sunday night. Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper) is a devoted Jane Austen fan; often immersing herself into a world of dashing gents, elegant corsets and picturesque manor houses.
Unsatisfied with her life and relationship in modern day London, Amanda's ordinary existence is changed forever when she discovers Elizabeth Bennet (Gemma Arterton) alive in her bathroom and ends up replacing her in the very 'real' fictional world of Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.
An all star cast brings Austen's classic characters to life in a cleverly modern context; with Hugh Bonneville as Mr Bennet and Alex Kingston as the irrepressible Mrs Bennet.

What keeps you sane?

Amongst the craze of the HSC, exams, assesment and assignments along with the countless pieces of homework and reading which needs to be done, I'm surprised at this point by the types of attitudes which many of my students are encompassing. Attitudes which comprise of a variety of wit, sarcasm, boredom and laziness. Considering that it is indeed your school holidays coming up, I'd be so interested in knowing the answer to this question: What keeps you sane?
1. Tiffany & Co.
2. Christian Louboutin Shoes
3. Buttercream Cupcakes and Cocktails Please list three responses as mine are already featured as examples.
PS: I am like the Queen of baking cupcakes. On my to-do list: Make cupcakes for students for XMAS. Yum.

Buy it now: Penguin Classics Novels

Forget overpriced books which will do nothing except slowly rob your of your finances, luckily Penguin Classics novels provide a cheap and chic way to read amazing fiction (and non fiction) at lovely and forgiving prices. At just $9.99 at most retailers, Penguin Classics novels include the best pieces of writing of all time including works by Jane Austen, Truman Capote, Oscar Wilde, Anais Nin, Scott Fitzgerald, Virginia Woolf etc. You are sure to find something which you enjoy to read these holidays. This series of novels are honestly my absolute favourites and I can never resist getting a new (cheap) novel each time I go out as the price and content make this such a good purchase. Check out the list of novels available and find some good tales to read this holidays. Enjoy.

What I'm reading now.

I'm currently reading Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I came across this book as one of my lecturers had mentioned the idea of 'Lolita' and I was quite clueless on the concept or story behind this title. The story is quite scandalous but extremely well written.

Title:
Lolita

Author:
Vladimir Nabokov

Blurb:
Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is a dark and daring story of obsessive love and transgression. Humbert Humbert's lust for his pubescent step daughter, Lolita shocked readers when it was first published in the 1950's; yet the novel was also celebrated for its beautifully lyrical writing. Almost fifty years after it's first publication, Lolita remains a powerful tale of perversion and love gone wrong.

6 random blogs which may interest you.

1. http://www.drunkwritertalk.blogspot.com/
A site where alcohol and writing walk hand in hand. Check out the different rants over novels, movies and stories which a group of five writers come up with when their on the hard liquor. Mostly funny however at times, enjoyably random.

Blogged by two fabulous New York women, the Daba girls represent the group of wives and girlfriends who date the elite group of bankers and expose their thoughts and opinions on the changing definition of romance during the recession.

Any aspiring fashion journalists out there? This is a glimpse into the critical magazine world which is more 'Devil wears Prada' than a sample sale. The bitchiness is exposed, the superficiality is revered and the industry is still one of the world's most desirable.

Postsecret is a (at times) creepy blog where postcards are sent anonymously often revealing an unexpected secret. The postcards feature a combination of funny and eerie postcards and are great as conversation starters.

One of the world's most iconic fashion photographers for Vogue magazine started out on this blog with a compilation of amazing photographs of the fashion elite. Take a trip to Paris, Milan, New York and more and check out what the runway stars are wearing off the catwalks and on the streets.

A satirical take on the daily musings of a British gossip journalist and a journalist in Manhattan as they prepare to reveal the Hollywood world piece by piece. Really funny and uplifting interpretations of the actions of celebrities and their counterparts.
There are obviously more of my favourites but I cannot remember them all from the top of my head so if you are interested in more blogs and random things, check out The Blogger Choice awards for a taste of all good things online. http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/

Sydney Writers' Festival: Writers Talk 2009.

If you are interested in either improving your short story writing skills or one day becoming the next Stephanie Meyer and whatnot, the following website may be of interest to you. It is a compilation of interviews from the authors and writers who spoke at the Sydney Writers' Festival and the authors include Isabelle Carmody, Morris Gleitzman, James Roy and Danny Katz. Here, they speak about characters, plots, themes and storylines as well as any other tips and advice for young writers. Check out the interviews as I'm positive it will assist you in your own writing and production of creative stories. There are also archived interviews dating back to 2007. I've made the site address a TinyUrl and you should be able to still access it. Let me know if there have any difficulties. http://tinyurl.com/ycqopgo or alternatively visit www.swf.org.au/news and find the direct link from there. Enjoy and get inspired!

Feeling inspired.

Instead of having a daily rant, I thought I'd just put in this very sweet paper picture to keep you all very inspired. Isn't it just lovely? I'm guessing it's perhaps easier than reading the book which she was cut out of? Metaphor anyone?

Enjoy!

Competition: Win 1 of 3 prizes!

This month's competition is perfect for any aspiring writers or anyone who wishes to practise their creative writing skills. I highly recommend that you all submit something in for a chance to win some fantastic literary prizes including DVD's, novels and other texts and stationary. The task is due on Saturday the 12th of December 2009 no later than 5.30pm. It needs to be presented as a printed document using Times New Roman font in size 12 with page numbers. Pages need to be labelled and bound. Name, contact number, title page and word count must also be submitted.

Task: Create a creative piece revolving around your understanding of life and the origins of humanity. It can be realistic or imaginative. Keep in mind the context, purpose and audience. This does not need to be a short story (if so, 3000-5000 words is sufficient). It can be a series of poetry, a film or television script, a play, documentary, picture book etc.

Good luck!

Reminder to year nine class: Payment is due.

Just a friendly reminder that payment for the year nine English class is due THIS WEEK. Please make sure you pay early to avoid further confusion. Also, any lessons missed are to be paid for except in certain situations (in which you should ask me for more information) as these four week classes are in a package and not designed to be 'pay as you attend'. The fee for Angels and Demons by Dan Brown (only if you requested a copy) is $13.00 and this is due on Saturday as well. You will not be able to receive your copy until payment is made. Please do not forget, extra processing fees may be underway if you cannot stay consistent with the due dates. Thankyou.

Teachers Pet: Smiggle slimline pens.

I'm obsessed with the Smiggle slimline pens which come in a large variety of colours to suit anyone's tastes! My favourites are the light blue, pink and silver as they are covetable pieces to fit into any pencilcase or handbag. These make the perfect little presents, all you have to do is grab a ribbon to tie it with and it's done! These pens are such perfect little goodies. Available from the Smiggle website and Smiggle stores for just $4.95.

Watch it: The Young Victoria

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, The Young Victoria is a historical film based on the turbulent first years of Queen Victoria's rule and her enduring romance with Prince Albert. Featuring a spectacular cast, this dramatization is a glorious reminder of the origins of the English monarchy and the rules and powerplay evident in the royal system and political government. Queen Victoria is portrayed wonderfully by talented actress Emily Blunt, who gives it a subtle and fresh portrayal of this historical protagonist. This film is perfect for anyone with a love of history and a happy ending.

What I'm reading now.

I'm currently reading L.A Candy by Lauren Conrad which I have to admit, is definitely not the best celebrity novel I've ever laid my eyes on. How it ended up on the NY Times book list, I have no idea. It's a mixture of cliche situations and unsophisticated dialogue with characters mostly one dimensional and extremely dull. Nevertheless, it might be enjoyable for a few of you who enjoy the idea of reality television, the ideals of fame and 'living the ultimate L.A life'. If you enjoy the television show, The Hills, I am sure you will enjoy this book however don't be fooled by the pretty cover...the written aspect is not half as sweet. For the rest of you, the novel will be a tortorous bore; one which you'd probably want to just flip over and throw in the bin.

A satirical glimpse at television.

Tune into TV Burp every Thursday nights at 9.30pm on Channel 7 (after The Amazing Race) for a satirical view of the daily musings and comedy of Australian television. If you have not seen it before, I have inserted the youtube link of a segment of the first episode for your viewing pleasure.

Article of the Day.

Quelle Horreur! French Flunk Europe-Wide English Language Test

The French may mockingly call English-speakers "roast beefs" or "yanks," but the latest results of an international language test show that the Brits, Americans, Australians and Co. may have a little more leverage to hurl their insults back at the "frogs."

In an article entitled "French Students Still Get a Zero for English", French daily Le Monde reports that an annual Europe-wide language test revealed just how bad French youngsters are at picking up what the journal describes as "the language of Shakespeare." In total, 109 countries sat down for the English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test, compulsory for foreign students wishing to study in an English-speaking country. France came in 69th in the ranking while Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium headed up the leaders' board.

The paper tried to recover some pride, stressing, "this does not, however, represent the entire student population. It only provides information for the 200,000 students wishing to study in an Anglo-Saxon country." It did not comment about the English language abilities of the remaining students who did not opt to take the test. Internationally, the French are known to be fiercely proud of their language and its various dialects, refusing to anglicise as is commonly the case in other European countries like Germany and Italy.

While Germans have no qualms about taking the word "comic" into their mouths, the French prefer to use "bande dessinée" or colloquially, "BD" to describe their cartoons. Hundreds of people living in the western region of Brittany, stand by their traditional Breton language, refusing to give way even to French -- let alone English. In 1996, the French government famously adopted a law ruling that at least 40 percent of music played on private radio stations should be sung in French, a move which aimed to combat what the government described as the "English-language influence," especially from rap, rock and hip-hop from the US.

But as the English language slowly but surely emerges as the lingua franca of business and other areas, many in France may now well want to polish their skills in "the language of Shakespeare."

Study Splurge: The Filofax.

Add it to your Christmas (or birthday) wishlist if you must but the Filofax will have to be the ultimate luxe way to study and stay organised for the rest of the year and everyday after that. You might all know that I have the Finchley A5 in 'Vintage Rose' (yes that chunk of a diary is indeed a Filofax) and it's definitely had it's perks in keeping my life organised. Available in a huge variety of colours, fabrics and sizes, along with your choice in what goes onto the pages, it is the quality of organisation which money can actually buy even if you need to save every penny along the way, it's totally worth saving over. Otherwise, get it for your birthday like I did. It's the best.(Above) Finchley leather Filofax in 'Vintage Rose': $399.95, visit www.filofax.com.au for info.

Films to watch.

Here is a site I found which lists all the great novels turned into films. I don't recommend you watch all of them without reading the novel beforehand as it may pique your interest to read the real thing first. However that is not to suggest that I don't give you permission to watch a few of these films in exchange for a study hour or two.

You might notice that many of them are featured as a part of the '1001 novels to read before you die' so I'd be hoping you got the drift of the storylines and themes while you are watching the films. Also, these films should be available at your local video store otherwise, let me know if you need help finding any.

What I'm reading now.

I've already finished Perfume by Patrick Suskind and I've found a new way to further enhance my adoration for wit and frivolity in a most literary comical way so I'm currently indulging in an ultimate classic; Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote. As a result of re-reading (one of my) favourite novel of all time, I am constantly reminded why Holly Golightly is my absolute alter-ego. This novel is really love at first sight.

Title:
Breakfast at Tiffany's

Author:
Truman Capote

Blurb:
In an idealized New York City during the early '60s, Holly Golightly is a charming socialite with a youthful zest for life who lives alone in a nearly bare apartment. She has such a flippant lifestyle that she won't even give her cat a name, because that would be too much of a commitment to a relationship. Maintaining a childlike innocence yet wearing the most perfect of designer clothes and accessories from Givenchy, she spends her time on expensive dates and at high-class parties. She escorts various wealthy men, yet fails to return their affections after they have given her gifts and money.
Enjoy.

Title:
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Author:
Patrick Suskind Blurb:
Patrick Suskind's Perfume follows the life of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, abandoned at birth in the slums of eighteenth century Paris, but blessed with an outstanding sense of smell. This gift enables Jean-Baptiste to master the art of perfume making, but one scent evades him: that of a virgin, whom he must possess to ensure her innocence and beauty are preserved. Laced with sense and suspense, this is a beguiling tale of lust, desire and deadly obsession.

Visual stimulus for Year Nine students.

This artwork is Le Due Frida by Frida Kahlo. I used this image as a related text for 'Changing Perspectives' area of study a few years ago and it will be great if you could all annotate the image and find FIVE techniques to discuss. It might be a bit helpful to look up the context of this artwork to assist you. It is extremely visual so keep in mind why the composer might have used this device to create meaning. Please have this completed by Saturday 22/08/09 and sign off in the comments section.
